The Great Depression

“Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:” -Revelation 3:17

During the Great Depression everyone was poor, and everybody knew it, but there were those who were a different kind of poor.  These were they who could be found on the street in the finest clothes; both fine and trendy.  These were they that if you were standing outside their houses you would see marvelous works of architecture; breathtaking in their splendor, and immaculate in their design. To the outsider they had all the things that the rest of the world did not.  But, if you walked in the front door of that luxurious home; and saw what was behind closed doors; you would find something very different indeed.  You would find a people that were cold and hungry like everyone else.  They didn’t have wealth or riches, they were trying to save face, and hang on to the one thing they did have………their good name.
How many people out there, how many reading now, are trying to save face?  How many are putting on a good show, but inside you are: hungry, poor, and destitute?  How many are carrying on the facade only because you are unwilling to admit that you’re broke?  You are unwilling to admit that you need a Savior.  God can meet the need of your heart, he can restore that which was lost, but you must first humble yourself before him, and admit your spiritual poverty.   The devil has rocked a nation of Christians to sleep, while we carry on “playing church” and putting on a show of religion; those around suppose they are all “rich in Christ.”  But what about what is behind the closed doors?  How full is your personal time with God, how ready your mind to receive his Word?  I ask to myself as I ask to all.  Do you have the Love of God to the very bottom of your being?  Does it permeate throughout all you are? Or are you in spiritual poverty; stuck in the Great Depression, just as the masses, but unwilling to admit your condition to save face?
I believe God wants to bless us, but God will not bless a lack luster sacrifice.  God wants the best out of us; he wants all of us.  He gave his Son to save us from the beggarly, hopeless condition that sin manifests.  Does he not deserve our all?  Does he not require our all?  Yes indeed, the plain truth is this…………God loved me when I was unlovable.  Jesus was mocked, scourged, stabbed, and crucified so that I MIGHT serve him.  The bottom line is, if we will give our all to God; God can give so much more than spiritual poverty, but we have to give our all.
