“And that he died for all, that they which live
should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them,
and rose again.” -2 Corinthians 5:15
Last week we left off talking about the fire that God gives
(please see last week's post for Fire of God for God). Once we are set ablaze
by God’s Holy fire we then begin to burn, and like a natural fire it is hard to
ignore; moreover, like a natural fire, our fire from God must be fed. So
the question remains:
How do we feed our spiritual fire?
Short Answer: Absolute obedience to God.
Long
Answer: When you have the Holy
Spirit dwelling within; within you resides the ultimate instructor. He
will teach, guide, lead, and exhort better and more precise than any other.
We must only obey. When the fire of God burns within, you no longer
live life to please yourself, but you live to please “him which died.”
You live to please God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. They “are one
and agree in one”, so living to please one, will please them all. The
Holy Ghost guides you, and you follow, each day living out our Savior’s prayer
“Thy will be done.”
The need for the Holy Ghost’s divine leading in our lives is a well-accepted fact
amongst the majority of Christians.
Furthermore, just as we need the Holy Ghost in our lives, we also need
to maintain clarity and commune with the Holy Ghost. This is where the
value of establishing and maintaining good spiritual disciplines comes in. Disciplines like: studying our Bibles every
single day, habitually attending church, spending time in prayer, and always
being willing to speak a word of utterance when the door is open. They help to maintain a close relationship
with Him who we live for and aid us in having constant clarity so that we can
always discern what God would have us to do. Furthermore, we must be willing
to cast aside anything that will compromise the clarity and communion with the
Holy Ghost. Our relationship with Christ must be as intimate as a
good Godly marriage, and the communication as often as a man and wife in this
marriage would communicate. Now I am no
marriage counselor, but odds are good, you’re not going to have deep meaningful
conversations in 5 minutes time, while the TV is on, while you both are
texting, while surfing the internet, while playing angry birds, while cooking,
while texting, while sporadically checking
your Facebook. To build a relationship
it takes time devoted to one another, just one another; it’s the same with
Jesus.
Your spiritual life should be like that old married couple
that has been together for like 50 years. They know each other so well
that they can look at each other and tell what each is thinking. Their
communication is so effective it is perfectly natural. To them, trying to operate without one
another is like trying to live life without their right arm. So should
our relationship be with Jesus Christ; we should be so close to Him and so
intimate with Him that we need not ask every waking minute “Is this your will?
Is this your will?” We are so in tune with him that it rightly
flows out of us, because “we are dead and our life is hid with Christ in God.” This is not to say that we never have times
when we must approach God and ask his will for our lives, because we must, but
the idea is to do His will always, and that cannot be done without knowing His will. Guard well your established spiritual
disciplines and if you have none hasten to establish them once you receive the
fire.
To recap,
the question presented was: How do we feed the fire? You give diligence to your
spiritual disciplines, which provide clarity and communion so that you may
always know the will of God, through the divine leadership of the Holy Ghost.
Then all that follows is obey. Obey, obey, obey; no matter how dark
the night or how deep the tunnel; know His will and do His will, in doing this you
will never burn out. In fact the Word
says you will burn brighter still.
