Fullness in Christ

“The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.” Pro 27:7

In 2017 we had our first snowfall in Albany, GA in ten years.  You would have thought it was the apocalypse.  People running everywhere; for food, water, gas, etc.  While looking out my kitchen window that day I notice people we not the only ones desperate to stay fed.  The birdfeeder in the backyard was unusually busy as well.  It seemed every bird within a ten-block radius had descended on the feeder.  Furthermore, we had another guest, an enterprising feral cat; looking to poach a meal. The cat was stationed at the base of our pecan tree, patiently waiting for a finch to light nearby.  I could see him from thirty yards, the bird could not, but then again, I was not hungry.  The starving bird had all his attention on the seed, none was given to the predator below.  Very soon, nature had run its course.
The scripture says that every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed.  The devil is a snarer of souls, a master deceiver, and a ruthless predator.  He is setting traps all over trying to entice the hungry and the weak.  He would bait, lure, and kill those who are eager to dine on an easy meal.  The tabby cat was only successful because its prey was distracted.  The prey so preoccupied with feeding; there is no time to wait.  Though the bird could see from the tallest trees and lift himself into the air with a beat of its wings, it still met his doom, because it was hungry.  Too hungry to notice the obvious.  Too preoccupied to care about the pitfalls waiting for him.  Satan will make the world so attractive to you.  He will use any means, any method, and anyone.  Striving to draw you away from Christ.  Allowing you to feed on the crumbs of worldliness.  Then, when your spirit is starved, and you fellowship with Jesus in shambles; he pounces.  Dealing a death blow to your spiritual life and carrying you off further and further into sin.  You become a part of him and cease to realize how far you have really gone.  Our one defense, our only defense, is a full soul.  A soul full of Jesus Christ, of the Holy Ghost.  A daily meal at the table of righteousness, holiness, goodness.  True fellowship with the Father and with His Son.  You cannot consume the world and expect to be full, because there is no substance in it for your spiritual man.  It’s concerning when sanctified people know just as much about upcoming entertainment, social affairs, and current events as the people of the world.  It’s concerning when sanctified people are dispensing an inordinate amount of precious resources into selfish pleasures and keeping step for step with people of the world.  It’s concerning, not simply because it’s happening, but because it’s telling.  Telling of where our hearts are trending, and of what we are consuming.

Matthew chapter five, verse six, says “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”  When you are full you don’t desire all that is in the world.  If you don’t desire it, the devil has nothing with which to attract or distract you.  Fullness is the defense; fullness in Christ.
