The Absalom spirit
“And on this manner did Absalom to all
Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the
men of Israel.” -2 Samuel 15:6
The heart of man, from birth, finds its allegiance rooted in the
natural. In the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life. This is inherent in the heart of every man
that comes into this world. It is the
carnal nature that has plagued mankind since the fall of Adam. For in Adam
all die, but in Christ all shall be made alive. Satan does not have to steal our hearts when
we come into this world. We are already
lost, already his. However, when we come
to be sanctified and we willing give our hearts over to God’s Son Jesus Christ;
then we are no longer a child of the devil, we are no longer living for this
world, and the Absalom spirit that exists in this world because of the devil,
works to steal our hearts back. The
Devil seeks to reclaim what was never meant for him in the first place. Only through Jesus do we have power to live
for Jesus.
David was the rightful kind of Israel, the anointed kind, the
appointed kind. Absalom sought to claim
what was not rightfully his; he camped by the king’s gate and courted every
person that came to the king for counsel.
He undermined King David through subtlety and deceit. Vaunting himself to be the “go-to” guy
whenever you had a problem that needed fixing, or you were in need of something
to make your life better. Absalom would
snuggle up close, and persuade the people into letting him do for them what
king David should be doing. In this
manner, Absalom stole the hearts of the
men of Israel. God desires the
hearts of his creation. He longs for us
to serve him, he longs to be in fellowship with us; so much so that he sent His
only Son to die for us, to redeem us. He
wants to be our king, our sovereign; he wants to reign within and be a Father
to us, a helper, guide, protector, and counselor. Moreover, he deserves our all, our best, our
worship, and our allegiance. The devil
wants the opposite for you; he wants to steal, kill, and destroy. The world, the natural, the flesh; that is
his playground and he operates behind the scenes, just outside the gate, using
cunning ways to try and steal the hearts of men and women. He tells you that money, fame, prestige,
society friends, companionship, entertainment, and all manner of
worldliness. These things that are of
the world and in the world; he tells you they can satisfy, and that you can
solve your problem. The Absalom spirit
that is of the world and in the world is simply the devil trying to convince
you that he can do for you what God wants to do you for. That he can do God’s job. The devil is so cunning, and so crafty, that
he will convince you of this, and then let you live your life believing that
you are in control of it. That your way
is better is better than God’s way. It’s
all about YOU. You’re the one that needs
a bigger house, a better spouse, a newer car.
You’re the one that “just can’t have this baby right now.” You’re the one that should be able to marry
whomever you choose, and do whatever you choose. It’s all about you, and he can fix it for you;
then convince you that YOU did it. When
in reality nothing is fixed, it’s all broken, and you know it, deep within you
know it. The Absalom Spirit imprisons
the masses trapped in carnality and it steals the hearts of Christians who have
once tasted of the joy that comes through serving God.
Only through Jesus and by Jesus can we see the Absalom spirit
for what it truly is. A sham, a ploy,
and a mockery of the one true God! No
one can do for you what God can do.
There is no king but the King of King’s, no lord but the Lord of Lord’s. When you wake up to the fact that the devil
is leading you down the wrong path, you must repent and turn to Jesus. Then ask for the Jesus to come in and be Lord
of your life. He will remove the Absalom
spirit and replace it with the Holy Spirit; and you will find more peace, joy,
and contentment serving Jesus, than you ever did serving yourself while serving
the devil. Jesus will give you the power
to live for Jesus.
